Darren Sarll says Matt Godden has the ability and personality to carve out a career further up the Football League pyramid adding that there are ‘worse forwards in the Championship right now’.

The former Ebbsfleet United striker has a better rate than a goal every two games in his first season in the Football League having scored 13 in 24 league matches so far, a tally that includes a brace against Crawley Town last weekend.

Godden is all set to lead the line against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday, and asked ahead of the match just how far his top scorer can go Sarll said that there are ‘worse forwards in the Championship right now’.

“He’s got a character trait that allows him to evolve. You don’t see it in many people,” Sarll says.

“When I met him for the first time I just couldn’t believe how ambitious he was and how much belief he had in himself.

“It never once turned into an arrogance or flashiness. I loved him from the first minute I met him. So how far can he go?

“Well he’s scored 13 so far in his first season and has done terrifically well. Matt will sit here and analyse himself and cross-reference himself and say he should probably be on 18 or 19.

“He’s got that ability and he’s got a lovely finish”

Sarll continued: “He’s an attractive proposition for a manager because the forward who wants to run in behind and score is dying. It’s a dying breed.

“A lot of young players now want to come to feet, play in the spaces and holes, in the pocket. All of that. Whereas Matt wants to make good runs in behind, affect defences and score goals.

“Add that to a willingness to really run and work hard for the team and sacrifice for the team, he’s a good player. He can do whatever he wants to do.

“He can definitely go another league up and probably again. There are certainly worse forwards in the Championship right now than Matthew Godden.

“Like I’ve said though it’s such a long way to go this season. Tomorrow can be a great day or not such a good day [against Wycombe].

“We’ve got to keep our feet firmly on the ground when it comes to Matt. It’s his first season and he has had peaks and troughs this season and we’ve had to manage him through that. But he’s in a good place. Six [goals] in five games. If I was a forward I’d be in a great place [with that form].”
