Children enjoyed artefacts from space when a Stotfold school was ‘visited by the moon’.
Pupils at Roecroft Lower School were given the chance to hold moon samples collected by astronauts on the Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972 to be studied.
Some of these samples have been preserved in acrylic disks for educational use by NASA, and since the mid-1980s, the Science and Technology Facilities Council has been running a loan scheme to allow thousands of schools, museums, and outreach organisations across the UK.
This means they can access the samples as well as a range of other meteorites and interesting moon rocks.
The school’s science teacher Miss Wood arranged for Roecroft to be part of the scheme so the children have all had an opportunity to study and observe part of the moon.
One Year 3 pupil said: “I think if I ever went to the moon, I would like my dog to come with me too because I would miss him.”
