A SUPERMARKET is providing the opportunity to recycle old possessions to help the needy.

This week the ASDA store in Biggleswade installed a clothes recycling bank in its car park alongside the bottle banks.

The store is also recycling mobile phones. Customers can make use of a special envelope from the customer service counter to send their phones to a charity recycling centre.

Customers who donate old mobiles will also have the chance to win a £500 prize and the store is also making donations to the breast cancer charity Tickled Pink

"In the UK we buy 1.8m tonnes of new clothes every year. Of these, 300,000 tonnes are collected for reuse or recycling every year and 1.1m tonnes are dumped in the rubbish bin so where are the remaining 385,000 tonnes?" said store marketing co-ordinator Zoe Homfray-Cooper.

"Are these lying in the back of a wardrobe or stuffed in a drawer? Maybe they are in the attic waiting to come back into fashion.

"Now we are appealing to people to drop these clothes into the bank here at ASDA in Biggleswade to help the Salvation Army provide clothes for those in need."

The clothes bank accepts any clothing and shoes that are still fit to be worn and other household accessories like sheets, pillows and blankets as long as they will fit in a washing machine.
