Cowardly thieves assaulted a woman from behind before snatching her handbag.

The attack happened when two men approached the woman at around 10.40pm on Saturday in Ditchmore Lane, near to The Chequers pub.

The 42-year-old woman was with her husband at the time and after a brief struggle, which left her on the floor, the pair made off with the bag.

They were then pursued by her husband into King George V Playing Fields where they dropped the bag.

Investigating officer Det Con Neil Davies said: “We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and saw the incident, or any people behaving suspiciously around that time, to contact us immediately. Fortunately the victim was not seriously hurt in the incident, but was badly shaken.”
