THE work of horticulture enthusiasts has resulted in Stevenage being crowned the winner of Anglia in Bloom for the second year running.

The competition encourages communities to take part in making improvements to their local environment but it is not just about colourful flower displays because education, links to the business community, recycling and working with young people is also taken into consideration.

The In Bloom Forum co-ordinated Stevenage's entry into the competition and Stevenage successfully fought off stiff competition from Norwich, Bedford and Broxbourne to win gold at a ceremony in Great Yarmouth this morning (Tuesday).

Sharon Taylor, leader of the council said: "We're delighted; we have done very well for the past five years.

"It's a very tough competition but it's our fantastic Anglia in Bloom forum who have worked so hard throughout the year.

"It's not just about flowers on roundabouts; it's about the whole community approach to making it a green and pleasant place to live."

Stevenage will once again represent the Anglia region in the Best Small City category for Britain in Bloom 2008. Judging will take place in November.

The In Bloom Forum co-ordinate Stevenage's entry into Anglia in Bloom. As well as entering the town for the Best Small City category, the Forum can also enter some of the best Stevenage in Bloom entrants into these regional categories:
