Rob Smart, who works at Stevenage aerospace company Astrium, appeared on the first episode of the BBC Two programme and sailed through to the second round of the competition.

The 54-year-old made a sandwich cake creation before winning the technical challenge with his angel cake with lemon and passion fruit curd.

Following his performance, judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood named Rob as the star baker for week one.

The fourth series of the show, presented by Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, sees 13 bakers tested on their cooking skills as they battle it out to be crowned The Great British Bake Off’s best amateur baker.
