A WOMAN who has spent most of her life in the local area has celebrated her 100th birthday.
Winifred Caine, a resident at Stevenage’s Woodside View Care Home, was visited by the town’s mayor Cllr Jack Pickersgill and more than 50 guests to celebrate her special day.
She grew up in Wymondley and lived there most of her life, serving as the first secretary of the village’s tennis club, was a member of the Harlequins entertainment group and served as president of the Women’s Institute.
Her nephew, Keith Berry, said: “She was born in an era when few people moved very far from their birthplace so it was nice to see so many old friends travel back here to see her. It was a really excellent day and I loved seeing my aunt enjoy herself so much.”
Mrs Caine also received a birthday card from the Queen.
