A Stevenage mum has organised an evening of clairvoyance and spiritual entertainment to raise money for the at–risk hospital unit that saved her son’s life.
Kerry Mitchell has been arranging such psychic events in Biggleswade and surrounding areas for four years to raise vital funds for the Brompton Fountain children’s charity which supports Royal Brompton Hospital heart unit in Chelsea – threatened with closure due to questions over standards.
Kerry’s son Elliott was born with Tetralogy of Fallot – a heart condition that causes the valves in his heart to leak due to a ventricular defect. Seven-year-old Elliott is still receiving treatment and will eventually need a donor heart.
Kerry – who works at the Ibis Hotel in Stevenage – told the Comet: “When Elliott was born he needed life support and open heart surgery. While I was in hospital waiting for him to have his surgery I picked up a leaflet for a charity that funds the life support.
“It’s such a worthwhile charity, as it provides equipment for the hospitals and so much support for people. Little things like packages for parents who are having to stay overnight at the hospital unexpectedly.”
Kerry decided to use her skills as an events planner to organise fundraising events for the Royal Brompton Fountain children’s charity, the next one being a psychic night at The White Hart in Biggleswade on Tuesday.
“Everyone loves a good psychic night,” Kerry added.
“People really took to them, so they’ve been going for four years now and I organise them all over Herts and Beds.
“It’s more about getting the charity’s name out there so people recognise it and get on board to support it. The heart unit is under threat of closure so we’re trying to keep it open. There’s been various marches and a big petition going around. We’re just waiting to find out, so it’s crucial for us that people are aware of the amazing work Brompton does.
“You would be shocked at how many families in the area there are that are supported by the hospital.
“It is really scary but I try to put my nervousness into positive energy and help the hospital the best I can.”
NHS bosses will decide today whether the unit should close because of questions over its ability to meet standards for child heart surgery.
The psychic night will see mediums do an open reading, with private readings available at an extra cost. Tickets are £10 each. For more information contact Kerry on 07795 488172 or email mrskerrymitchell@gmail.com.
