Stevenage MP Stephen McPartland has been appointed to chair a powerful House of Commons committee which can overturn laws seen to be hindering businesses.
Mr McPartland was last week appointed to chair the Regulatory Reform Select Committee which examines and reports on Draft Legislative Reform Orders – secondary legislation used by the Government to remove an existing law which is deemed to place an unnecessary burden on businesses.
It is a form of ‘fast-tracking’ non-controversial legal changes without the time consuming need to introduce a new Bill before Parliament.
It also means he becomes a member of the Liaison Select Committee, which is made up of all Select Committee Chairmen and takes evidence from the Prime Minister on matters of public policy.
Mr Mcartland said: “It’s an incredible privilege to be elected chair of this important committee.
“I look forward to working with the new committee and staff.
“I am very pleased, as it is a powerful committee with huge responsibility and a real privilege to be elected as the Chairman.”
Mr McPartland was re-elected MP for Stevenage for a third term at last summer’s General Election.
He will also remain a member of the Finance Select Committee.
