Stevenage drew 1-1 with fellow play-off chasers Exeter City at the Lamex Stadium on Easter Monday, leaving them two points off the top seven with two games left to play in Sky Bet League Two

Boro took the lead through Kurtis Guhtrie’s deflected header on 28 minutes, but the Grecians levelled on with five minutes to go till half-time thanks to Ryan Bowman’s close range effort.

Bowman thought he’d won the points for the visitors with 83 minutes on the clock, but his close range tap in was ruled out for offside, meaning both sides took a share of the points.

Ilias Chair had the first shot on target with 10 minutes gone, testing Christy Pym with a low drive from the edge of the area.

The opening 25 minutes was one of few chances, with both sides feeling out the tempo of this must-win clash.

Stevenage looked the most likely to score though, and they did just that with 28 minutes gone.

A ball swung into the box by Luther James-Wildin was met by Guthrie, whose downward header forced a save from Pym, but a horrible mix up between the Exeter ‘keeper and Dara O’Shea saw the ball deflect off the defender before rolling into the net.

It’s a goal that Guthrie will be keen to claim though, and one which takes his impressive recent tally to six goals in four games.

The lead lasted just 10 minutes though, as another deflected shot drew Exeter level.

Boro failed to deal with a ball into the box, with Bowman’s close range effort hitting Terence Vancooten and Paul Farman before trickling over the line, silencing the Lamex faithful.

The Grecians almost took the lead moments later when Randall Williams cannoned a shot of the cross bar, with the ball bouncing just in front of the line.

The sides would go into the break all square, but Exeter very nearly went ahead just seconds after the interval as Williams got free inside the area, with only a superb tackle from Vancooten stopping a certain a goal.

With an hour gone, the away side were looking the more likely to score, and they would have had it not been for Farman, who was quick off this line to smother a Jake Taylor effort.

With the game drifting into next goal wins territory, Bowman thought he’d scored the all important winner when he tapped home a rebound from a Williams shot, but the offside flag went up immediately, ruling the goal out.

Neither side could find the winner, leaving Stevenage two points behind Exeter in seventh, with two games against Mansfield and Cheltenham Town to go.
