A man who broke into Stevenage Football Club and stole money from charity boxes has been sent to prison for six months.

Brett Vroome, of The Chace, was found guilty at Stevenage Magistrates’ Court last week of breaking into The Lamex Stadium, on Broadhall Way, on October 7.

Vroome, 37, broke a reinforced window worth £2,000 at the club’s entrance and then climbed into the building.

Once inside he smashed open some charity boxes and stole an unknown quantity of cash. He offered no evidence in the trial. His barrister, Joshua Normanton, tried to argue that it wasn’t him in the CCTV but the prosecution said all three police officers who attended the scene were 100 per cent sure it was him.

Vroome has 11 previous offences for theft and similar crimes and was given a 26-week prison sentence. He was also ordered to pay a £2,000 fine and will have to pay an £80 victim surcharge when he leaves prison.
