Stevenage defender Fraser Franks is looking to add an attacking edge to his game as he adjusts to life at full-back.

The recognised central defender has been playing right back in place of the injured Ronnie Henry of late with Luke Wilkinson and Jack King impressing in the middle of the back four.

The Stevenage back line has been in mightily impressive form having conceded just one goal, and that was a penalty, in their last five Sky Bet League Two games.

The 26-year-old said: “I’m enjoying it [at right-back], I feel I have been solid, but I need to start adding more to my game going forward now.

“The way we play, it’s a big part of my game to contribute not just at the back but going forward.

“I feel I’m slowly getting that in my game again and looking to do more on the ball now.

“Centre back is my natural position and where I prefer, but as long as I’m in the team I’m happy, anywhere will do me.”

Franks’ situation highlights the intense competition for places in Darren Sarll’s promotion-chasing side that is fourth in the table.

Franks, who was signed for Boro by Teddy Sheringham from Luton Town in the summer of 2015, feels the strength of the squad and the harmony in it despite that rivalry to get in the team is why it is currently so successful.

“I remember at the start of the season Dale Gorman was starting games, Henry [Cowans] was starting games and you had the likes of Jobi [McAnuff], Tonge, Schie [Steven Schumacher] on the bench and they knew they had to wait their turn and since they have come into the team they have taken it.

“You can see with all the boys on the bench there is no attitude of ‘I hope he doesn’t play well so I can get my place back’ it’s just pulling in the same direction and that’s why it seems to be working well.”

This weekend Barnet head to the Lamex Stadium with the second highest scorer in the division, John Akinde in their ranks.

Of what he expects from the derby rivals, Franks added: “A physical game; they have got a big lad up front and a few big lads at the back so we need to be careful on set pieces.

“They will show us a bit of respect and try to stop us playing like a lot of teams are going to do now, we need to be a bit more creative on the ball, play our football, pass it and hopefully we can get another win at home.”
