Stevenage could be set to lose a second major store after it was announced electronics retailer Maplin has gone into administration.

Maplin has a store on the Oaklands Retail Park off London Road – one of more than 200 in the UK where the firm employs 2,500 staff.

Stores will remain open while the firm works with administrators PwC to work towards achieving the best possible outcome.

It is understood an agreement had failed to be reached with potential buyers, Edinburgh Woollen Mill, Country Casuals and several other retailers.

It comes shortly after the news earlier today that Toys R Us – which has a store on the nearby Roaring Meg Retail Park – has also gone into administration.
