Volunteers have packed more than 30,000 books into a shipping container set for Kenya, where it will be transformed into a library for a deprived community.
Just Be A Child was set up by Stevenage resident Lenka McAlinden in 2013 following a trip to Kenya. The charity supports children living in the country through various projects, including building playgrounds and libraries.
More than 30 volunteers have helped to pack a 40ft container with more than 1,000 boxes, bags and parcels - including 30,630 books - at Stevenage storage company Dollimore and Christie.
JBAC has so far established two libraries in Kenya, and this will be its third. Lenka said: “The first container in 2015 had 7,000 books, the one in 2016 had 13,000, and this year there are almost 31,000 books. That is just unbelievable.
“Thank you to every single person who came and helped, or donated books.
“The container will travel for 35 days and we will be there to meet it in Kenya.”
