A group of inventive car mechanics have embraced the Christmas spirit – and showed their environmental credentials at the same time – by building a giant Christmas tree out of recycled wheel rims.

Staff at Fix Auto in Gunnels Wood Road piled in behind the project designed by Sam Gilbert, son of managing director Terence Gilbert, to build the tree from a hundred or so wheel rims that have been recycled to be used again.

Operations director Richard Harrington said: “We wanted to do something Christmassy that shows our commitment to recycling at the same time and is related to what we do.”

Business development manager Sharfin Khan added: “The aim is to show that we use recycled materials and to create some kind of buzz in the community. We are right on the main road so we thought it would be nice that people can see it when they are driving past”

The tree, pictured bottom right, comes complete with lights rigged up by the team and even has a star on top. It took three days to build.
