A round-up of services and events taking place across North Herts, Stevenage and Central Bedfordshire to mark the centenary of the armistice being signed, marking the end of World War I in 1918.

Arlesey

• Sunday: Remembrance Day service from 11am at Arlesey War Memorial at the junction of High Street, Church Lane and House Lane.

Baldock

• Saturday: A commemorative service with local churches and the Baldock branch of the Royal British Legion will be held to mark the centenary of the 1918 Armistice. The service will begin at 3pm and refreshments will be served in St Mary’s Church hall afterwards.

• Sunday: A Remembrance Sunday service will be held at Baldock War Memorial in High Street from 10.30am. After a two-minute silence at 11am, the church bells at St Mary’s will be rung by Knights Templar School students.

Clifton

• Sunday: Clifton’s Act of Remembrance will take place at 10.45am at Clifton War Memorial, Church Street. It will be followed by a procession from the war memorial to All Saints’ Church, where a Royal British Legion service will be held. There will also be a collection in aid of the Royal British Legion.

Hitchin

• Thursday: Hitchin Quakers have created a display of white peace poppies to commemorate all the millions of people who have died as a result of war in the the last 100 years, The Meeting House in Brand Street will be open for people to see the finished display on Thursday, from 5pm to 7pm. Everyone is welcome.

• Saturday: Theatretrain will be performing a short piece to celebrate the centennial of WW1 ending with a series of characters creating moments that changed them during the war performed to music. There will be a performance in Market Place at 12.30pm and again at 2.45pm by Hitchin War Memorial.

• Sunday: Gather 10.45am for an 11am Act of Remembrance lead by Canon Michael Roden at Hitchin War Memorial in Churchyard. A live screening of this service and the one held at the London Cenotaph will take place on a big screen in Market Place, and is followed by a one-hour children’s art project from 11.15am to 12.15pm, materials supplied. Join neighbours, friends and fellow Hitchin residents as together our community remember those who gave so much. There will also be a service at St Mary’s Church at 2.30pm. The Royal British Legion and uniformed organisations will take part and all are welcome to attend. During the service, the names of the Hitchin men who died during the war will be read out.

Letchworth

• Sunday: There will be a Remembrance Sunday service at Letchworth War Memorial in Station Place from 10.30am. Angel Wings doves will be released at 11am – coinciding with the two-minute silence – to remember those we have lost and for future peace. Lord Lieutenant Sir RJT Wilson will lead the ceremony. This will be followed by a service at St Michael’s Church, Broadway, at 11.30am. All welcome.

Shefford

• Sunday: A morning parade to Shefford War Memorial starts at 10.35am with the parade marching into the town centre.The Act of Remembrance will start at 10.55am. In the evening,there will be a gathering in St Michael’s Church at 6pm.Tea, coffee and cakes will be available,and there will be a commemorative display by Shefford History Group.

Stevenage

• Sunday: At 6am a piper playing the Lament will be at Stevenage War Memorial on the Bowling Green in Stevenage Old Town. From 10.15am there will be a parade marching from Primett Road to the war memorial, followed by a service and two-minute silence at 11am. At 6.55pm The Last Post will be played at the war memorial, before a beacon is lit at 7pm.

Whitwell

• Sunday: A Service of Remembrance will be held at Whitwell War Memorial at 3pm.

Acts of Remembrance

• Sunday, 11am: Two-minute silences will be held across the country at 11am on Sunday, November 11, 100 years after the armistice was signed between the Allies of World War I and Germany at Compiègne, France, for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I, which took effect at 11 o’clock in the morning – the “eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month”.

• Sunday, 6.55pm: At 6.55pm 1000 individual buglers will sound the Last Post.

• Sunday, 7pm: At 7pm ‘beacons of light’ will be lit at more than 1000 locations across the nation and UK overseas territories symbolising an end to the darkness of war and a return to the light of peace.

• Sunday, 7.05pm: At 7.05pm 1000 cathedrals and churches will ring out their bells across the nation, and beyond, in celebration of peace, and 100 town criers throughout the UK and around the world will join together in an ‘international cry for peace’.
