TWO top ballroom dancers tripped the light fantastic at a special performance in Comet country.

Anton du Beke and Erin Boag, best known for their appearances on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing, were the guests of North Hertfordshire District Council's 50-plus dance and social committee.

They treated the audience at the Spirella Ballroom in Letchworth GC to a display which included a Viennese Waltz and spent time talking to members of the club and spoke to The Comet about the recent increase in popularity of ballroom dancing.

Anton said that initially people became interested in dancing after trying out Argentine tango and salsa.

He added: "Ballroom dancing is social and fun. It's nice to do and there are people off the telly doing it and you can have lessons with them."

Erin said: "I think men can see how nice it is if they can dance. It's quite attractive to a woman."

The pair have been dancing together for seven years and turned professional in 2002. They are currently ranked in the world's top 24.

Anton was recently called in to help out two dancers, Hollie and Darrien, from the BBC's current dancing series, Strictly Dance Fever.

On last week's show he was cited as an example of how to perform the American Smooth, and described by judge Arlene Phillips as "so smooth you could iron your clothes on him".

The dance and social committee's next event will take place on Saturday, June 3, again at the Spirella Ballroom.
