Al Hayhurst, who was last year named the best standard bearer in Herts, was inducted into the role by county president Col Kevin Fitzgerald at the Herts Royal British Legion county conference in Hatfield – where it was announced that the Poppy Appeal collection had increased to £37 million nationwide.

Guest speakers came from SERV, the so-called ‘Blood Runners’ – volunteers who deliver blood and milk by motorcycle to hospitals across Hertfordshire out of hours.

Baldock Legion member and county vice-chairman Paul Middleton said: “The feeling at the conference very postive about the future of the Legion, but new members, Poppy collectors and supporters will always be made most welcome.”
