Staff at Tesco Express in Letchworth were threatened by a man with a baseball bat last night.
Officers were called to the Middlefields store at about 9.10pm after receiving reports that a man had entered the store holding the bat and had stolen money.
A 55-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of robbery a short time later after being found close to the scene.
The man – who is from Letchworth – remains in police custody.
