A village store near Hitchin was robbed on Friday by a thief allegedly brandishing a knife – and detectives have today appealed for witnesses.

Police are investigating after the robbery at St Ippolyts Stores, on the corner of London Road and Waterdell Lane, at about 6.30pm on Friday.

A man approached from the direction of London Road just as the shop was getting ready to close and stole cigarettes and cash before running off across London Road towards Brookend Lane.

The robber is described by police as a ginger-haired white man, about 30 years old, of medium build and about 5ft 9in tall. He spoke with what is described as a northern accent.
