A MAN from Comet country is getting ready for an epic 500 mile walk in memory of his mum.

Greg Dedman, 28, from Station Road, Letchworth GC, is set to walk from France to Spain, following the route of a medieval pilgrimage called the Camino De Santiago.

He will be raising funds for the Comet's charity of the year, the Sue Ryder Care home at Stagenhoe Park, in memory of his mum, Donna.

Donna, who died 10 years ago, was a dedicated care worker and fundraiser at the home, which cares for people with neurological illnesses.

She campaigned to open a new wing for neurological diseases, which now bears a memorial plaque to her.

Greg will start the challenge with his friend Anthony Curnow, 24, on July 10, his mother's birthday.

The first leg will take him from the village of St Jean Pied Le Port across the Pyrenees mountains.

Greg said: "We will set off at 7am each morning and walk for around 15 miles each day.

"Our pilgrimage passports will be stamped at each village we reach and local restaurants have special menus on offer for pilgrims where we can eat free.

"There will be hostels along the way where we can bed down for the night, but I don't mind roughing it under the stars on the odd occasion. It's all part of the experience."

The whole pilgrimage is estimated to take six weeks and will finish at the cathedral of Santiago de Compestela, in western Spain, where Greg and Anthony will be greeted with certificates of completion.
