A CASH machine was taken and several thousand pounds of damage caused to a shop in a raid in the early hours of Saturday morning.

A red Land Rover, which had been stolen from elsewhere in the town, was driven into the front of Basra News, Food and Wine in Pixmore Avenue, Letchworth GC at around 3.30am.

It is thought that three or possibly four burglars then took the cash machine from inside the shop and drove off in the Land Rover.

They then left the vehicle in Hitchin Road and drove off in another, unidentified vehicle.

Police are now appealing for witness, especially anyone who saw the second vehicle driving off at speed.

The burglars are described as male, wearing dark clothing and white face masks.

Anyone with information is asked to ring 01992 533002.
