SEWAGE has been pumped into a field where children play.
Condoms, used nappies and sanitary towels were all found among an acre of brown untreated sewage in a field in Hitchin Road, Weston.
The findings are all the more worrying because the field is used for horse riding for the disabled and is next to a children's recreation ground.
Joanne Wright, who owns the field, told The Comet: "It is disgusting. At first I saw the brown water but after a closer look I could see tampons and condoms. The health implications are worrying. Children are playing in this but the water company do not see it as a priority."
She asked: "Why is untreated sewage being pumped into a field? Why isn't it going to a treatment plant?"
She said she noticed the problem on December 21 but the water board only began to clean up the field on Friday January 6.
An Anglia Water spokesman said an investigation has begun into the problem. So far they have concluded that the pumping station close to the field is not to blame for the sewage in the field.
She said a blockage has occurred in a "stray" pipe which they are still trying to locate.
She said: "We are investigating the problem to make sure it doesn't happen again. A review will take place to locate the pipe and block it off.
