A SCHOOLBOY had the rubbish job of officially launching a space age "green" recycling machine.

Five-year-old Sean McCann, who attends St John's RC Primary School, Baldock, cut a green ribbon to open the special rubbish recycling machine at the town's Tesco Extra store on the High Street.

Sean won an art of recycling competition organised by the retail giant, where students had to design a poster of a futuristic environmentally themed recycling station.

The poster will be professionally printed and displayed on the side of the recycling unit. He also scooped £100 of Tesco gift cards.

Store manager Glyn Sowkes presented environmental science course leader from the school, Caroline Wiffen, with £500 to support environmental school projects.

Caroline said: "The new machine is really fantastic and the children were fascinated by how it works.

"As a school we strongly support recycling and local initiatives to encourage recycling and we are delighted to be involved in launching this new machine.

"I would like to thank Tesco on behalf of the school for this generous donation, which will be put towards environmental projects.
