SCHOOLS could benefit from the recycling of unwanted clothes.

Stevenage Borough Council has teamed up with recycling business BCR Global Textiles and nine schools to take part in the scheme.

The company will give each school cash based on the amount of textiles they collect.

BCR currently provides 20 "bring banks" across the town, recycling items such as clothes, shoes, sheets and towels.

Already £1,000 has been donated to the Mayor's Charity Fund since March through proceeds from BCR banks.

Executive councillor for environment and e-government Richard Henry said: "The benefits of this scheme are two-fold as it gets young people involved in recycling and rewards their school financially.

"We are proud to offer this scheme in partnership with BCR Global textiles and I urge any school not already involved to sign up."
