Paramedics were called to Nobel School on Mobbsbury Way just after 8am.
The air ambulance also landed in the grounds of the school.
Gary Sanderson, spokesman for the ambulance service, said: "The girl, who we believe to be 12, was in collision with a car.
"She sustained a leg, head and shoulder injury.
"The team of medics from the air ambulance assisted the paramedics at the roadside, stabilising the girl before conveying her to Lister Hospital in Stevenage by road."
He added: "I wish to thank the deputy head and his team from Nobel School for their help and assistance at the scene, and ensuring the young girl's friends were cared for during this unfortunate incident.
