POLICE are to clamp down on parents parking illegally outside schools in Biggleswade.

Parents dropping off their children not only cause congestion in front of schools but make the area dangerous for children to cross roads and often park illegally.

One of the first areas to attract police attention was outside Southlands Lower School in Kitelands Way, Biggleswade.

The day after a road safety programme at the school with posters being produced by the children and given to parents warning them of the dangers of parking near school entrances, three drivers were given on the spot fines of £30 for parking their vehicles dangerously and for obstruction.

"The problem of cars parked outside schools in the town is getting quite bad again," said Biggleswade beat manager Pc Ian Wilson.

"We had a purge on this kind of parking earlier in the year and the problem seemed to go away but it has returned and we are now warning motorists taking children to school we will be cracking down on illegal parking.

"The day after the event at Southlands Lower School I went back there and handed out the three tickets. One vehicle was actually parked on the zig-zag by the pedestrian crossing and another on the grass verge.

"Our warning is simple, we will be keeping a closer watch on parking outside schools in the town and if anyone infringes the law they will be given tickets.
