Samaritans in North Hertfordshire and Stevenage is replacing what is often seen as the toughest day of the year with a chance to have a brew and a catch-up.
The charity has declared Monday, January 15 – often known as Blue Monday because it is seen as the most depressing day of the year – as Brew Monday.
On this day it is offering people the chance to get together for a cup of tea and a chat to share any issues with friends and colleagues.
In the lead up to it – on Saturday, January 13 – Samaritans will meet at Stevenage railway station to hand out tea bags ready for the event.
They will also be at Biggleswade and Hitchin stations on the Brew Monday itself.
The charity’s North Herts and Stevenage branch issued a statement saying: “Isolation and loneliness are among the main reasons people contact Samaritans. Joining up and having a tea with someone can provide a lift when dark days, cold weather and bills take centre stage.”
Comedian Vic Reeves, a key supporter of the campaign, added: “I love nothing more than a good brew, so Brew Monday is a great excuse to do that and also have a catch-up with your nearest and dearest.”
Just turn up on the day to collect your free tea.
