WORK starts next week to make adjustments to a safety scheme carried out earlier this year.

Hertfordshire Highways modified the roundabout in St Michael's Road, Hitchin, during the summer but it soon became clear that the works were not slowing down traffic heading towards Great Wymondley as was intended.

So work will now start on Monday to make the roundabout bigger and more oval in shape. The kerb lines of the road will also be extended out, forcing traffic to slow down.

County councillor Stuart Pile, executive member for highways, transport and rural affairs, said: "The work has been scheduled for half term to keep disruption to a minimum and we are avoiding working during the school run in the second week to prevent congestion in the area."

The week commencing October 30, working hours will be from 9.30am to 4.30pm.

Temporary traffic lights will be in operation to ensure the safety of the public and the workforce.
