A DRIVERLESS lorry brought a town centre to a standstill after it ploughed into traffic at lunchtime today (Tuesday).

The seven-and-a-half ton white Scania lorry was parked on Brand Street in Hitchin at 1.20pm when it began rolling downhill with no one at the wheel.

It first struck a parked blue Vauxhall Astra, crushing its front wing and puncturing a tyre before glancing off into the path of oncoming traffic, ripping the rear bumper off a grey Peugeot taxi and leaving a black Audi A6 estate unable to be driven.

Police closed the road while the driver was found and a recovery truck could tow away the Audi. No one was injured.
