The fox was found wedged in the front of the car after being hit in an accident the night before. The driver believed that he had hit the fox and it had gone under his car.

RSPCA animal collection officer Amy Reiter was called to help free the fox.

She said: “The lad had hit a fox during the early hours of the morning and thought it went under his vehicle.

“He hadn’t realised the fox had survived the accident and had no idea it had, in fact, got stuck in the car.

“The following day, when he went to check his car for damage, he found the fox alive and wedge in the car grille.”

The driver then drove his car – and the fox – to a nearby vet to see if they could help free the fox.

When they were unable to help, animal welfare charity the RSPCA was called.

ACO Reiter continued: “The fox was understandably very frightened and distressed.

“He didn’t want us to go anywhere near him and I couldn’t wrap him in a towel due to how he was stuck, so I used my grasper to get hold of him – without getting bitten – and carefully pulled him free.

“I was able to check him over at the scene and, as if by miracle, he had no serious injuries.

“It’s astounding that, having been hit and stuck in the grille for around 12 hours, the fox was not only still alive, but was no worse for wear.

“I drove the fox back to the area where the young man reported he’d hit him and found a nice, safe common nearby to release him so he could find his way back to his den and family.”
