A COUNCIL has denied it is letting a sporting facility fall into disrepair in order to sell it on for housing.

Stevenage Borough Council said it is not cost effective to maintain the lawn in Sish Lane as a putting green.

A concerned member of the public told The Comet: "I have noted that the putting green on which I whiled away many a happy hour as a youngster does not appear to have been in use now for years.

"I would love to see this asset to the local area revitalised for the benefit of future generations."

A spokesman said the council has no plans to sell the land for housing and no application for planning permission has been made.

He said: "Currently, the putting green is maintained in the same manner as all parks and public green spaces in Stevenage, and there are no plans for particular regeneration of this area at the moment.
