POLICE have closed off a large area of a Stevenage industrial estate this morning (Monday) after reports of a hazardous substance leak at a factory.

The report came from a member of the public at a factory in Caxton Way at 6.03am and firefighters from Stevenage and Hitchin attended, along with a special hazardous materials unit from Hemel Hempstead.

Police have warned motorists to steer clear of Gunnels Wood Road, where one lane has been closed until further notice. Workers have also been kept behind a cordon at Bessemer Drive and are not being allowed into offices or factories.
