A town council has dropped plans to slap another £10 on their council tax.

Sandy town councillors were warned residents would rebel against paying it saying it was too high a price for taking over the public toilets, the tourist information centre and other responsibilities dumped by Mid Beds District Council as part of an attempt to shave £2m off its annual budget.

However, at a full meeting of Sandy Town Council on Monday night, councillors decided the price of the toilets, the information centre and other costs would mean residents paying an extra £3.65 a year on council tax bills. This will be the first rise in two years by the town council.

Councillors also agreed their proportion of the council tax from Mid Beds District Council would be £76.73 for every household in the town for the coming year. The town council's budget for the year is £360,000 of which £311,000 will come from council tax and the remainder from income from other services.
