HOSPITAL staff and patients have been branded "thoughtless" by residents blocked in by people avoiding high car parking charges.
Residents say they have been verbally abused by motorists parking inconsiderately in roads surrounding Lister Hospital.
Peter Ross, of Daltry Road, told The Comet: "Hospital parking has become a real nuisance to the residents in the hospital area.
"Residents are fed up as there is a real risk that fire engines and ambulances would not be able to gain access in an emergency.

"The council are fully aware of the problem but seem to be taking their time in sorting out a remedy. Residents have had to deal with abusive behaviour from people parking and blocking the road, along with damage to property and vehicles."
Another resident of Daltry Road, who did not want to be named, said: "What rights do we as residents have - it appears none and when asking for assistance from the police they are reluctant to get involved to say the least.

"Perhaps it will take a serious incident that needs the involvement of an emergency vehicle before any action is taken."
Peter Gibson, East and North Hertfordshire Trust spokesman, said: "The Trust recognises the importance of being a good neighbour. Parking off the hospital site, although not directly within the Trust's control, is an issue that we take seriously - especially if concerns are being raised about the actions of our staff.
"The Trust is an active member of the informal parking group which is part of the Stevenage Old Town joint liaison committee run by Stevenage Borough Council. The parking group is also attended by local residents' groups.
"We know that parking around the Lister is a problem and we are committed to working with the council on the matter. The Trust also lets its staff know that if they choose to park off site they should do so with due consideration for local residents. Where residents feel that a member of Trust staff has been inconsiderate then we would very much welcome being given the details."
A Stevenage Borough Council spokesman said: "Having consulted residents in all residential areas in the vicinity of the hospital, the council received hundreds of replies.
"These will take time to analyse and it is our intention to use a consultant to carry this out. All residents will be informed of the next steps once the initial analysis has taken place.
