A TREE-mendous effort has been made to revitalise a park in Hitchin.

Residents living around The Green in Oughtonhead Way were desperate for more trees to decorate their open space.

They grouped together to raise £240 towards the cost of planting five new trees.

A contribution was also made by the district council and on Friday residents met with the council's tree officer, Mick LaRoche, to see how the trees were getting on.

The money bought three ornamental crabs, a pyramidical hornbeam and a tulip tree which have replaced dead and diseased trees on the green.

Mr LaRoche thanked the residents on behalf of the council "for this most generous gesture".
