THERE was an eerie hush over a school as children used their mouths to raise money for charity.
Whitehill Junior School in Hitchin took part in a sponsored silence, The Big Hush, and gave their teachers a very quiet day indeed.
It was all in aid of Macmillan Cancer Relief, which helps people in the UK living with cancer and provides a range of services from specialist health care to emotional support.
Teacher Suzanne Walton helped organise the day and said: "It went extremely well and we raised almost £200 for Macmillan Cancer Relief.
"The children did brilliantly and carried out lots of activities, including silent charades, silent plays and using the British sign language.
"Each class was silent for about 20 minutes and they had no trouble keeping quiet.
"We also had a representative from Macmillan who came to explain to the children what they were raising the money for."
Money raised by events held across the country will help Macmillan fund specialist nurses and doctors for people affected by cancer.
