A Hitchin knitting group has excelled itself with about 80 items of clothing that will be donated to help the needy across the UK.

The clothes made by the Knit & Natter group – based at the Park House retirement scheme off Old Park Road – will go to the Queen Mother’s Clothing Guild, which gives new clothes and linens to other charities that help the homeless, children and people living in care homes, hospitals and hospices.

Mary Cole has been involved for 30 years, and since she moved into Park House the Knit & Natter group has met each other Wednesday for two and a half years.

Each year there are about 22,000 garments donated from across the country – which are collected and displayed in St James’ Palace during a visit by the charity’s patron Princess Alexandra, then distributed to the numerous charities that the clothing guild supports.
