Schoolchildren from Baldock have taken part in a march to mark World Refugee Day.
Year 6 students from St John’s Catholic Primary School set off from their playground on Wednesday morning – when the United Nations’ annual awareness day took place – and walked for half an hour to Holy Trinity & St Augustine of Canterbury RC Church.
In the church’s gardens the pupils performed readings and made speeches about the troubles faced by refugees every day, with Father Denis Sarsfield in attendance.
Prior to the event, the students put together a letter to send out to parents and North East Herts MP Sir Oliver Heald, inviting them along.
Leah and Molly, on behalf of Year 6, told parents in the letter: “Refugees have to walk whatever the weather, so please make sure your child has a coat, because we will be doing the same.”
Although Sir Oliver couldn’t attend, he said: “The pupils at St John’s clearly have a well-developed social conscience and they are to be applauded for striking a blow on behalf of refugees.”
