Protestors campaigning to save four trees in the heart of Letchworth GC watched in anger today as they were finally felled.

Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation had refused to reprieve the trees in Leys Square. In their place will be erected a fountain as part of the Foundation's street enhancement scheme.

Workmen began preparing for the removal of the trees just before 8am this morning by moving the barriers watched by campaigners who blew whistles and shouted as the trees finally came down in less than 10 minutes.

Campaigners recently delivered an 18,000 signature petition to the Foundation asking them to keep the trees in Leys Square but they refused to change their original decision.
