AN MP says he has received assurances that "reasonable compensation" will be given to traders disrupted by a town centre redevelopment.

Oliver Heald, MP for North East Herts, met representatives of Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation to discuss plans for the £60m scheme.

Mr Heald said that he was also told it would be possible to redevelop The Wynd first and use some units there to relocate shops from the Arena area.

The Foundation also assured Mr Heald that The Wynd will have a "Letchworth Garden City feel", reflecting the traditional architectural style of the town.

Mr Heald had pledged to meet the Foundation to put across the concerns of traders in the town, many of whom are opposed to the plans to demolish the Arena area.

He said: "I was pleased by the assurances that I have been given by Letchworth Garden City Heritage Foundation and hope that this may go some way towards satisfying the traders.
