My thanks to A J Hollis of Ordelmere, who wrote to the Heritage Foundation to highlight one of the world's most famous and influential scientists of the modern era. I certainly did not know until recently and I am a Letchworth lad through and through that this famous man was actually born in our town, did you? 1919, I am told, I understand he has lived in the USA since the 1960's and is still alive. Mr Hollis states that Professor Lovelock's research on the atmosphere also led to the studies of the ozone layer, among his many projects. I think that this is very poignant at this time with so much being spoken and written about global warming etc. A recent article about Professor Lovelock in The Independent, by John Gray, Professor of European Thought at the London School of Economics states that Lovelock is the most important and original scientific thinker in the world today. Mr Hollis suggests that there should be a plaque or some gesture of recognition to Professor Lovelock in the town centre. This follows the same idea from a man who recently responded to the Foundation's Public Consultation regarding the new plans for the re-development of our town centre - he also, would like to see a plaque or something erected to honour the Professor - what do you think?
