THE head of nursing for surgery at Lister Hospital, Mary has shaped the role of matron since its inception following the publication of the NHS plan some six years ago. In placing the patient at the centre of hospital care, she has also championed the profession within the hospital by encouraging and supporting staff to embrace new ways of working.

Mary's caring and compassionate approach to anxious patients and families is a credit to her role and she will often be found in the accident and emergency department giving moral support to staff and relatives at times of crisis.

Commenting on the award Mary said: "The whole thing has been a surprise to me. I saw these awards and was encouraging our staff to nominate other members of the team. I am staggered that they nominated me.

"My whole ethos is that I set high standards in everything that I do and if I can get others to match me then we will always succeed.
