A fundraising appeal to improve a pre-school's facilities got off to a flying start with a surprise cheque presentation.
After unveiling a money chart in the shape of a sunflower, Hitchin MP Peter Lilley received a £4,000 cheque on behalf of Tilehouse Street Pre-school from Hitchin Youth Trust.
Pre-school committee member Janet Impey said: "We are absolutely delighted. The Hitchin Youth Trust cheque was a complete surprise and it's really boosted the effort. We are stunned actually."
The official launch on Saturday at Tilehouse Street Baptist Church was attended by around 200 people with almost £500 raised on the day and more money still coming in.
The appeal also received the support of Hitchin-based charity Sound Base, which is producing copies of a special CD of songs by the pre-school children.
With £11,495 - over a quarter of the target of £40,000 - raised so far the pre-school hopes to have a partially covered outdoor play area and a garden, as well as a set of children's toilets, ready for use by thre autumn term.
Janet Impey said: "It will improve the facilities and help the children enormously.
"Even on a drizzly day they will be able to go out and play."
