A quarry expansion plan at Potton has the backing of the town council, subject to several conditions including no extra traffic to and from the site.
The local authority was considering proposals by building materials group Breedon to expand Potton Quarry in Potton Road, Everton.
This would see the quarry move slightly closer to the town, according to independent councillor Adam Zerny – who represents Potton on Central Bedfordshire Council.
In a Facebook post, Mr Zerny said: “Although the owner states it is seeking no increase on present quarrying levels, the local authority should put in place strict limits on annual output and vehicle numbers.
“Given the site is close to a residential area, if it is approved, my view is the start time should be no earlier than 8am and vehicle movements to and from the site should be completely restricted until this time.”
He added that a traveller site would be about 90m from the edge of the proposed workings and is concerned about the impact of noise and dust.
The town council is backing Mr Zerny’s call for no extra vehicle movements from the development beyond what’s currently allowed.
It is asking for all lorries leaving and entering the site to head towards Everton, unless they are travelling to specific sites in Potton.
This is to avoid HGVs using Myers Road when travelling to and from the quarry.
Signage needs to be installed to advise that vehicles must turn left and then right as they leave the site, according to the town council.
It also wants to reduce dust by ensuring the nearby road surfaces and HGV tyres are washed down.
Another condition is for site security to be sufficient to prevent any anti-social behaviour on the site, as scrambling bikes have been ridden round parts of it.
And the town council is asking for a financial contribution to Potton’s green infrastructure plan and green wheel initiative.
Central Bedfordshire Council’s development management committee will make a decision on the quarry’s planning application in due course.
