Potton butcher thanks community for help clearing up after car hits shop front

Considerable damage was done to the front of Clayton Family Butchers, in Market Square, after the crash at about 10.30pm on Sunday night.

Manager Adam Clayton told the Comet that the driver – who was not injured – had just “blacked out” momentarily while coming round the corner, and failed to brake or sufficiently steer.

He said: “He’s got some sort of unknown condition, and this has never happened to him before. He sort of blacked out coming round and didn’t apply the brakes or steer, and he’s hit the bricks and come into the window.

“We’re lucky it didn’t happen during the day.

“I live just round the corner. People came out from surrounding businesses and helped clear up all the glass and everything.

“It was really nice to have everyone come out like that – you don’t really get a sense of community sometimes, but without their help it would have taken all night.

“I’d particularly like to thank the owner of the Coach House, Chris Woodcraft, and his staff, as well as the Charter family and Tim from number 21 – I’m afraid I don’t know his last name.

“I just hung about until people came to board it all up, which was at about 3am, then I went.

“We’d just like to wish the motorist well – he was quite shaken up and hopefully he makes a full recovery. We don’t hold this against him at all.

“I’d also like to say thank you to everyone for all the support and messages we’ve had since the incident as well, from our customers and from the wider public too.

“We’re going to have to stay closed for the moment – they’re coming to assess at the end of the week and we’ll go from there.”

Police said they were called at 10.30pm to an incident in Potton’s Market Square in which a car crashed into a building.

A spokeswoman said no-one was thought to have been injured and that no offences were committed.
