POLICE had to smash their way into a house at the weekend after reports that a man was damaging the property.

Nearby residents in Violet Way, Biggleswade, had called the police after hearing smashing glass and banging coming from the house on Sunday lunchtime.

Officers from Biggleswade went to the three-bedroom property where the man lived alone but he refused to allow them in despite talking to them through the letter box and at the window.

After continued attempts to try and persuade the man to allow them in, officers finally had to force their way into the house by smashing the front door lock.

Police say despite the internal damage to the building the man did not put up a struggle and was taken to Greyfriars police station in Bedford for questioning.

Insp John Maries said windows had been smashed along with other property inside the house and window frames damaged.

"The man did not resist attempts by officers to remove him from the property. At the moment we are not sure why he began damaging his own property."

After questioning the man was released and he is now understood to be staying with family.
