DETECTIVES want to speak to a couple who might have seen two robbers fleeing along a Sandy street.

The robbery was in Windsor Way close to midnight on Saturday when a taxi driver was attacked by two men he had brought from a Bedford nightclub.

Police say the driver was in the process of dropping off two customers from his Vauxhall Astra when one of them attacked him through the open window.

During the attack, say police, the driver managed to escape from his taxi and knock on the door of a nearby house to raise the alarm.

One of the offenders is believed to have searched the taxi and property was stolen before the two men left the scene on foot.

Dc Ian Holden, the officer in charge of the investigation, said: "A couple walking along St Neots Road spoke to the victim and told him they had just seen two men running along the road.

"I would urge them, or anyone else who may have information relating to this crime, to come forward and speak to me in confidence."

Dc Holden can be contacted at Greyfriars Police Station, Bedford, on 01234 275367 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

* Police say two men were arrested at an address in Sandy on Saturday night in connection with the incident and have been bailed pending further police inquiries.
