A police pursuit resulted in a 40-year-old man being arrested for going equipped to steal after he was allegedly seen acting suspiciously around vehicles in Stevenage on Saturday.

Police approached a man in the Fairlands Way/Popple Way area of the town just after 3pm. The man made off on foot and a pursuit ensued, with several police cars and a police van called to the scene.

Officers eventually detained the man and he was arrested for going equipped, after a screwdriver was found on his person.

He then allegedly verbally abused several officers, before he was further arrested for a Section 5 public order offence – use of threatening words and behaviour – and taken into custody.

The man, who lives in Stevenage, has been charged with a Section 5 public order offence and released on bail.
