CROOKS are working for PIN money in North Herts - and it could cost their innocent victims dear.

Police this week warned members of the public to never disclose their Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) for their bank or building society cards.

The move followed a series of incidents in Hitchin and Letchworth GC where victims received calls from a man claiming to work in a bank.

In the first, he rang a woman in Hitchin at around midday on Wednesday last week and said that people had been trying to use her card.

He asked the victim several questions including what the PIN number was, which the victim answered. She later discovered cash had been withdrawn from her account.

The second incident was in Letchworth GC shortly after 1pm on the same day when the victim also received a phone call from a man claiming to work for a bank. He told the victim that their cards had already been used in stores and asked for their date of birth and middle name. The victim later discovered that money had been withdrawn from their account.

The same thing happened to another person in Letchworth GC that day.

Supt Adrian Walter said: "These incidents have caused the victims unwelcome stress and worry.

"We would urge all members of the public to never disclose their PIN numbers, ever, not even to anybody in a bank.

"PIN numbers are for the person whose name appears on the card only and should never, in any circumstances, be disclosed to a third party.
